people of North Orange County

North Orange County historically had rich cultural, ethnic, and economic diversity. One could travel only a few miles and find areas populated by differing ethnic groups. Additionally there was the mix of multi generation natives and new arrivals.

There has been increasing social change brought on by the overall population growth in central Florida with an influx of new residents. More dramatic is the change brought on by the 1999 government buyout and closing of the muck farms on Lake Apopka causing the immediate end to much of crop farming. An economy once driven by agriculture is now fueled by population growth.

I felt a desire to visually document the current local people and the disappearing culture as new residents dilute the character of the community. This series of photos were made from 2003 through 2005.
