Christopher Columbus' initial landing in the New World in 1492 was just 15km east of Gibara. He described it as "The must beautiful earth than human eyes had ever seen". Gibara, founded in 1817 had a fort guarding the mouth of its harbor until 1898 when Cuba gained it's independence from Spain.
